I. INTRODUCTION
Klondike is today's most popular solitaire game. It is known by many
different names including Fascination, Demon, and Small Triangle. Canfield
was made famous by the owner of a Saratoga gambling saloon in the 1890's.
Mr Canfield sold a deck of cards for $50 and then paid the player $5 for
every card he played to the field.
II. RULES FOR PLAYING KLONDIKE
Klondike is played with a regular deck of 52 cards. You begin the game by
dealing the tableau which consists of seven piles. The first card is dealt
face up on the left and the next six cards are dealt face down moving to
the right so that you have one card in each of seven piles. The eighth
card is dealt face up on top of the second pile and the next five cards
are dealt one to a pile face down moving to the right. You continue in
this manner until you have one face up card on top of each of the seven
piles. The remaining 24 card are your Hand.
The object of the game is to move all of the cards in the piles and in the
hand to the Field, the area to the right of the piles. You begin this
process by moving any aces which are showing to the field. You may build
on each ace in ascending order (A, 2, 3, . . . , 10, J, Q, K) and in the
same suit.
You may build on the face up cards in the piles in descending sequence and
in alternating color order. For example the 4S may be played on the 5H.
You must move all face up cards from a pile as a unit, i.e. in the example
above the 5H-4S combination could be played on the 6C. Whenever you move
the face up cards off a pile, turn over the the top card. After you clear
all of the cards out of a pile, you may fill the blank space with a king.
You turn the cards in the hand up in packets of three and place them in a
waste pile. The top card from the waste pile may be played either to the
piles or to the field freeing up the card below which may then be put into
play. After you go through the entire hand, you pick up the waste pile and
turn it over making a new hand. You may go through the hand as many times
as you wish in this manner.
Example Game: Your beginning face up cards might look like this:
┌────┬────┬────┬────┬────┬────┬────┐
│ 3 │ J │ K │ 4 │ A │ 9 │ 6 │
└────┴────┴────┴────┴────┴────┴────┘
Make the following moves:
AD to the field, turn up 8S
3H to 4C, open a blank spot
KD to blank spot, turn up 5D
4C-3H to 5D, turn up 2H
The tableau and field would now look like this:
┌────┬────┬────┬────┬────┬────┬────┐ ┌────┐
│ K │ J │ 5 │ 2 │ 8 │ 9 │ 6 │ │ A │
└────┴────┼────┼────┴────┴────┴────┘ └────┘
│ 4 │
├────┤
│ 3 │
└────┘
You now have no more moves so you would begin going through the hand.
III. RULES FOR PLAYING CANFIELD
Canfield is played with a regular deck of 52 cards. You begin by dealing
thirteen cards face up into a Stock pile on your left. The next card is
then dealt face up in the field. This is your first foundation card. You
now finish your tableau by dealing four face up pile cards to the right of
the stock pile. The remaining 34 cards are your Hand.
The object of the game is to play all of the cards in the five piles and
the hand to the field. The rank of the first foundation card determines
the rank of the remaining foundation cards for that game. You build on
each foundation card in ascending order and in the same suit. The suits
are circular so an ace may be played on a king and a deuce on an ace.
You may build on the tableau pile cards in descending sequence and in
alternating color order. Again the suits are circular so an ace goes on a
deuce and a king goes on an ace. The cards in the stock pile may be played
to the field, to one of the four piles, or to a blank pile space if one
develops during play. Once the stock pile is empty you may fill in a blank
pile space with any card from the hand.
Example Game: Your beginning tableau might look like this:
┌────┬────┬────┬────┬────┐ ┌────┐
│ 3 │ 9 │ A │ 5 │ J │ │ 5 │
├────┼────┴────┴────┴────┘ └────┘
|
├────┤
│ J │
├────┤
│ 2 │
├────┤
│ K │
└────┘
Make the following moves:
KS to AH (the 2D is now on top of the stock pile)
5H to field, open a blank spot
2D to blank spot
The tableau and field would then look like this:
┌────┬────┬────┬────┬────┐ ┌────┐ ┌────┐
│ 3 │ 9 │ A │ 2 │ J │ │ 5 │ │ 5 │
├────┼────┼────┼────┴────┘ └────┘ └────┘
| │ K │
├────┤ └────┘
│ J │
└────┘
You now have no more moves so you would begin going through the hand 3
cards at a time.

regardless of color.

Below is an explanation of how to use the keyboard to manipulate the cards
and control the appearance of the screen. The various keys perform the

Cursor Keys:
Cursor Left (4) and Cursor Right (6) Keys: Use these keys to move the
cursor back and forth across the screen. If you move past either
edge of the screen, the cursor will move to the the other side.
Function Keys: (The number keys across the top of the keyboard will

keys are disabled when the help screen is shown, however, the F7,
F8, F9, "C", "S", and "Q" keys remain active. Press the ESCape
key when you want to return to the game.
F3 - Move Through Hand: Each time you press this key you will move

be shown at the bottom of the screen.
You can press any key to continue playing the game. You can only

your score.

╚═══════════════════════════════╝
At this point you can select from a total of 48 different color
combinations. Press the "B" key to cycle through a total of 16
different background colors or press the "F" key to cycle through
3 different sets of foreground colors. After you have selected
the color combination you want, press the ESCape key to return to

║ Press any key to continue. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
"X"- eXception: You can use this key to make moves which would not be
allowed under the rules of Klondike and Canfield. The X key will
have a different effect depending on the level at which you are
playing. Pressing the X key in level 3 will turn up the next
face down hand card. If all of the hand cards are currently face
up, then the entire hand will be turned over and an exception
will not be counted against you.
Pressing the X key in level 2 will allow you to make one level 1
move (i.e. you can play consecutive cards of the same color on
each other or you can place a card other than a king in a blank
spot.
The X key has no effect in level 1.
The number of exceptions you make will have a direct bearing on
the score you can achieve. See the scoring rules in the next
section.
V. KLONDIKE AND CANFIELD SCORING
Your score in Klondike or Canfield depends on three things:
1. The number of cards you play to the field.
2. The lowest difficulty level that at which you play.
3. The number of exceptions you make at that level. If you make 8
exceptions at level 3 and then switch to and finish the game at
level 2, then the game will be scored based on level 2 - zero
exceptions in the table below.
